We tried out a few burger joints within easy reach of downtown San Antonio.
Fatty’s Burgers And More

This is the family business of Mark Outing, who really has quite a remarkable personal story. Head out of downtown San Antonio going east on Commerce and you’ll see a bright yellow building on the left that declares you’ve arrived at Fatty’s Burgers. The interior is sparse, but there are a few large screen TVs all tuned to sports programming. The downtown lunch crowd is growing as more folks are finding out about the great food. Outing has added a quirky little freebie to his menu–everyone dining in is welcome to a serving of special recipe pinto beans. A small serving of those along with the quarter pound Fatty’s Original burger with cheese was plenty for me.

The Mini Yellow Submarine From Timbo's

Long ago, there was a burger joint on McCullough called “Little Hipp’s”. This place was fantastic, but when the owner Dick Hipp passed away in 2002, the restaurant that fed hundreds of thousands of people big fat burgers closed down. The building now houses “Armadillo’s” that boasts 3lb. burgers–but we haven’t tried that yet. That review will come soon. The end of “Little Hipp’s”, however meant the launch of Timbo’s near the Pearl Brewery. Timbo’s is owned by ‘Timbo’ and Teresa Lang, who both worked at Little Hipp’s for years.
